Businessman . . . Take A Step Back To Recognise Businesswoman

When I hear the phrase ‘businessman’, my mind always goes back to the 1960s tv shows like the Avengers.  There are several episodes showing businessmen and they are reverred, as being the idea of someone who has reached the pinnacle of their personal success.  There is one episode that I have watched quite recently that is dreadfully sexist but so rediculously unlikely that it is quite forgiveable.   It involves a group of women assasins who get themselves hired as top class temporary secretaries – when it was possible to be a well paid top class temp.   They then make themselves utterly indispensable and when the ‘boss’, he of the striped trouser and morning jacket with smart bowler hat . . . .  finally realises he has lost the plot and becomes annoyingly inquisitive, said temporary secretary bumps him off in any one of an ingenious array of methods open to her by way of a charm bracelet containing weaponry & poisons etc.  The reason I mention this episode is that the writers of it were making a very good point in that the secretaries of the 1960s were very often much better at their jobs than the boss ever accepted and he was always threatened when any secretary got to know how anything actually worked or showed enough initiative to take over.  Not these days – so many organisations are started up by women and remain seriously successful in todays frenzied business world.   Hurrah!
